Over the Line Brings Bats to the Beach - Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle
About 2 year(s) ago by Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle
Over the Line brings bats and balls to the beach in San Diego near Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle. This variation of the Great American Pastime takes place on the sand with just three players per team. The world championship takes place in San Diego over two weekends in July, July 9-10 and July 16-17.
A Mini-Baseball Variation
Over the Line is a San Diego invention, making the most of our best resources: sunshine and the beach! The game draws on baseball and softball, but is its own unique sport. There are just three players per team, and the pitcher and batter come from the same side. Only women's games use gloves for ball catchers, and the bats and balls are softball regulation.
Cut a diamond in half and you get a triangle, and that forms part of the OTL court. The triangle has an open-ended rectangle extending from it. The base of the triangle is "The Line" that gives the game its name--batters need to put the ball over the line into fair territory in that rectangle. There's no running to bases, because there aren't any bases; the game is all about hitting and fielding, not sliding and tagging.
An International Event
Although the game was invented in San Diego, it's now an international sport. The World Championship draws hundreds of teams from around the world. Maybe because it's held on a beach, there's a party atmosphere that draws thousands of spectators as well.
Come join us in July to witness this unique San Diego experience. The event's location in Mission Bay Park is just 10 minutes from our hotel. Hang out at the beach to watch sunset after the day's competition is over, fading out on another fantastic San Diego day.
