The Ocean Beach Holiday Parade on December 2 isn't your typical holiday parade. This annual event (now 38 years and counting) in San Diego's surfin' neighborhood has a unique funky feel of its own. Unlike most holiday parades, this is an evening event, running from 5:05pm to 7pm, making it a great lead-in to enjoying the nightlife in Ocean Beach's bars and restaurants.
Get there on time to find a spot along the parade route on Newport Avenue, watch the tree lighting that kicks off the event, and then enjoy the show. This year's theme is "California Dreamin' in the Season of Love." Parade participants include the Point Loma Marching Band and the SD Roller Derby Girls. There'll also be classic VW Beetles and woodies, plus motorcycles, floats, musicians, and, of course, Santa Claus.
In fact, you might want to head to Ocean Beach early to enjoy exploring the neighborhood before the evening festivities. Besides the beach (which includes a dog-friendly section), the town is known for great shopping, especially in the Ocean Beach Antique District. You might even meet the "O.B. Air Force," the wild parrots who make the nabe their home.
It's less than 10 minutes from Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle Near SeaWorld to Ocean Beach, so you don't have to worry about a long drive to the parade or getting back after dark.
