Best Ghost Tours in San Diego: A Guide to the City's Haunted History

By Days Inn Hotel Circle

When the sun goes down in San Diego, some of the city's oldest stories come alive. From the historic streets of Old Town to the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego is full of haunted history, ghostly legends, and spine-tingling experiences waiting to be explored. And with Days Inn by Wyndham San Diego Hotel Circle as your home base, you're just a short drive from some of the city's most famous haunted hotspots.

Ready for a little fright night? Grab a flashlight, bring a brave friend, and explore some of the best ghost tours and haunted attractions San Diego has to offer this Halloween season!

Ghosts & Gravestones Frightseeing Tour

Approximately a 7-minute drive
Length: Approximately 90 Minutes
Age guidance: PG-13

For a classic San Diego ghost tour with a twist, climb aboard the Ghosts & Gravestones Frightseeing Tour at Old Town Market. The nighttime experience combines a trolley ride with walking sections through some of Old Town's most atmospheric locations. The tour includes stories of San Diego's colorful characters, from gunslingers and gamblers to ladies of the night, alongside tales of the city's darker history.

One of the highlights is a nighttime walk through El Campo Santo Cemetery, followed by a visit to the grounds of the Whaley House. The tour does not enter the Whaley House itself, making this a great choice for guests who want to experience several haunted landmarks rather than spend the evening in one location. The combination of trolley travel, storytelling, and walking also makes it different from a traditional walking tour.

*Fun tip while visiting El Campo Cemetery: America’s only cemetery-adjacent speakeasy (or spookeasy in this case) is located right next door. Stop by Oculto 477 for mysterious vibes, and the best mezcal and whiskey selection in all of San Diego. To enter, you must be willing to confess to one of the 7 deadly sins…come prepared if you dare!

Whaley House Haunted Evening Tour

Approximately 7-minutes
Length: Approximately 30 to 40 minutes
Age guidance: may not be suitable for children under 13; minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Few San Diego landmarks have a more mysterious reputation than the Whaley House. Built in 1857, the historic home has become synonymous with stories of paranormal activity and is widely promoted as America's Most Haunted House.

The evening guided tour takes guests inside the historic house and around its grounds after dark. Along the way, guides share stories of the Whaley family, the home's history, and the legends that have surrounded it for generations. The experience lasts around 30 to 40 minutes, making it a good option for travelers who want an intimate haunted-history experience that can easily fit into an evening in Old Town. Unlike a city-wide ghost tour, this experience keeps the spotlight firmly on one iconic location and its fascinating history.

The Original Old Town Haunted Ghost Tour

Approximately a 7-minute drive
Length: Approximately 90 minutes
Age guidance: Recommended for ages 10 and up

For travelers who prefer to explore on foot, The Original Old Town Haunted Ghost Tour offers a deeper dive into the historic neighborhood. The 2026 schedule lists daily departures at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. from October 6 through October 21.

The route includes Heritage Park, El Campo Santo Cemetery, and the grounds of the Whaley House, with the tour offering access to areas that other tours may only view from outside. The experience is particularly interesting for history lovers because the stories are woven into Old Town's historic buildings, cemeteries, and streets.

The difference here is the walking experience and access to historic locations after dark. Put on comfortable shoes, bring your curiosity, and prepare to see Old Town from a decidedly different perspective.

Whaley House After-Hours Paranormal Investigation

Approximately: a 7-minute drive
Length: Approximately two hours
Age guidance: May not be suitable for children under 13; minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult

Ready to go beyond ghost stories? The Whaley House After-Hours Paranormal Investigation takes the experience several steps further. Guests receive exclusive after-hours access to rooms that are not part of the regular public tours and learn how to use ghost-hunting equipment during the investigation. Equipment can include EMF detectors, digital spirit boxes, infrared thermometers, and other paranormal investigation tools. The experience lasts approximately two hours and is designed for guests who want to actively participate rather than simply listen to stories.

This is the most immersive Old Town option on the list, so it is best suited to curious adults and older teens looking for a more hands-on Halloween experience.

The Gaslamp Quarter Ghost Tour

Approximately 15-minutes
Length: Approximately two hours
Age guidance: 18+

For a change of scenery, head downtown for The Gaslamp Quarter Ghost Tour. The approximately two-hour walking experience explores the darker history of the Gaslamp Quarter, including historic buildings, crime, scandal, and stories of the people who once inhabited this lively district. The tour includes stops inside historic locations such as the Davis-Horton House and the Horton Grand Hotel, giving guests a chance to explore a different side of San Diego's past. Its focus on true crime and mature historical themes makes this an adults-only experience, distinct from the more family-oriented Old Town options.

Prefer Your Haunts a Little Less Real?

Not every Halloween fan wants to investigate actual historic locations after dark. If staged scares, elaborate sets, and plenty of screams sound more appealing, San Diego has you covered.

The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park

Pumpkins and candles on forest floor

Approximately 10-Minutes
Hours: Generally evenings, with schedules varying by date

The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park delivers a traditional Halloween fright experience rather than a historical ghost tour. The attraction combines a mile-long outdoor trail through Balboa Park with a 3,500-square-foot eXperiment Maze.

It is a good choice for guests who prefer live actors, elaborate sets, and staged scares over tales of supposedly haunted buildings. The attraction is not recommended for children under 10 and includes intense effects, strobe lighting, and uneven terrain.

SeaWorld Howl-O-Scream

SeaWorld San Diego Howl-O-scream graphic

Approximately 15-minutes
Hours: Event starts at 7 p.m.; entry begins at 6 p.m.

For a larger-scale Halloween night, SeaWorld Howl-O-Scream transforms the park after dark with haunted houses, scare zones, monstrous entertainment, and other nighttime attractions. The 2026 event runs on select nights from September 11 through October 31. Unlike the history-focused tours, this is all about theatrical Halloween thrills. It is separately ticketed and is designed for guests looking for a full evening of staged scares rather than paranormal legends.
