San Diego Padres Baseball (now through Sept.)

Hometown heroes the San Diego Padres have been bringing big-time, “swing for the fences” baseball to the city for more than 50 years. USA Today has also recognized the Padres’ home of Petco Park as one of the finest stadiums in the league, too — So much so that they recently named it “the best stadium in baseball” for the second year in a row. On top of their baseball season, our stadium also offers a jam-packed summer concert series with big names like Darius Rucker, Weezer, Porter Robinson & more! So grab a seat, a craft beer and a bag of peanuts, and cheer our boys on for game day.

San Diego County Fair (June 7 – July 4)

San Diego County Fair

No San Diego Summer is complete without a trip to the San Diego County Fair. Amazing food, thrill rides and awesome entertainment are always in abundance, so the county fair is a great way to experience the best of San Diego. The theme of this year’s fair is “Get Out There”, encouraging everyone to enjoy the great outdoors. When you go, expect amazing food (like“Chicken Charlie’s” famous food stand, featuring Flamin’ Hot Cheeto potstickers, deep-fried S’mores & more), incredible exhibits, pulse-pounding thrill rides, and world-class live entertainment. This year’s mainstage lineup includes music from Train, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Switchfoot, Boyz II Men, Alabama, and comedy from Kevin Hart. Insider tip: bring your credit card, as the fair has gone cashless for parking, admission, rides and games.

Big Bay Boom and Fourth of July Fireworks (July 4)

(Photo: @bigbayboom)

Independence Day is always a cause for celebration in San Diego, and 2023 is poised to be one of the biggest yet. The massive Big Bay Boom fireworks display will be taking place on July 4th, launching from four barges across San Diego Bay. This family-friendly celebration is always a fantastic time filled with food, music and fun. The Big Bay Boom isn’t the only major fireworks event happening this weekend. SeaWorld San Diego hosts a 3-night event from their park, and Mission Bay Yacht Club is returning with their July 3rd display just minutes away on Mission Bay (which you can view from our sister hotel The Dana). So head over to any of these celebrations, set up your spot, and get ready to “ooh” and “aah” as the sky comes alive with color.

San Diego Pride (July 8 – 16)

San Diego Pride is the city’s premier LGBTQIA+ cultural festival. The theme for 2023 is “Find Your Voice”, encouraging community participation and activism. This year’s Pride will once again feature large-scale live events, such the Pride Power Summit, Queer Prom, North Park Music Fest, and  — of course — the massive Pride Parade, the region’s largest civic event. Don’t miss your chance to head out, BE out, and live it up in the city! Want a closer look? Check out our next post, “Spotlight on San Diego Pride”.

San Diego Comic-Con (July 19 – 23)

The world’s biggest celebration of comics culture returns to the San Diego Convention Center once again. The reputation of Comic-Con precedes it for fans of pop culture. For the uninitiated, Comic-Con is a massive event that draws thousands of attendees every year — every one there to honor the impact that all things superhero, sci-fi, fantasy, and magic have had on entertainment. Elaborate costumes, video games, panel discussions, meet-and-greets, and comics galore will greet visitors at this year’s con. *Locals’ tip: there are countless local events surrounding the Con during its run. We recommend heading downtown to the Gaslamp District to enjoy amazing people-watching, pop-up events and comic-themed drink specials from the surrounding establishments.

horse racing

The famous horse races at Del Mar have been a crowd favorite for decades. Fans first flocked to cheer on their favorites beginning in 1937, when Bing Crosby welcomed spectators to the stands. The legendary Seabiscuit took the inaugural race by a nose only a year later. If you’re looking for a fun, upscale afternoon event, head north to the park, and place a bet on your pick of the ponies while enjoying a gorgeous day out at this legendary series.
